Former National League MVP and Baseball Hall of Famer has died at age 74, the Pittsburgh Pirates announced Saturday.

The Toronto Raptors are reportedly keeping one of their most experienced players for the 2025-26 season.

Guard Garrett Temple intends to sign a one-year, $3.6-million deal to return to Toronto, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.

Temple has been with the Raptors for the last two seasons. In 2024-25, he appeared in 28 games, averaging 1.9 points and 1.1 assists per contest.

The 39-year-old took the floor in each of Toronto’s final three regular-season games in 2025. He posted a season-best performance in over 33:26 of game action against the Dallas Mavericks on April 11. Temple scored 12 points, grabbed five rebounds and dished out three assists in what ended as a Raptors loss.

He arrived in Toronto as a free agent ahead of the 2023-24 season, and returned last off-season on a one-year deal, as well.

Temple has filled an important leadership role during his time with the Raptors, providing veteran mentorship to a young Toronto roster.

The 15-year NBA veteran brings experience from stops with 12 franchises. His longest stop came with the Washington Wizards from 2012 to 2016. Temple has also played for Houston, Sacramento, San Antonio, Milwaukee, Charlotte, Memphis, the L.A. Clippers, Brooklyn, Chicago and New Orleans.

He also played one season overseas, suiting up with Novipiù Casale Monferrato of Italy in 2011-12.

Temple has appeared in 771 career NBA games, posting averages of 5.9 points, 2.2 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 0.8 steals while shooting 40 per cent from the floor and 34.2 per cent from three.
